Looking back on Movember, Kubrick Mental Health First Aiders discuss the importance of removing stigmas in and outside the workplace to support mental wellbeing for all genders.
Kubrick Voices is back for Season 2 to share the stories and experiences of Kubrick consultants and community members from both sides of the Atlantic. This time, host Camilla Dickson is joined by Kubrick Advanced consultant Tom White and Kubrick Data Engineer Euan Newlands in recognition of Movember.
The yearly movement to raise awareness and funds for men’s health initiatives around the world includes both physical health challenges specific to men, but also highlights the mental health crisis specific to the male-identifying community. Across both the UK and the US, the picture is the same: over 75% of suicides are completed by men, making them 4x more likely to experience this mental health issue than women. But, thanks to organisations like Movember, the conversation is moving things in the right direction.
As members of Kubrick’s Mental Health First Aid team, Tom and Camilla discuss the ways in which challenges workplace stigmas and encouraging open dialogue around mental health can help to support long-term wellbeing and improve employee satisfaction and ultimately success. Euan, a volunteer with the True Athlete Project prior to joining Kubrick, shares his tips for bringing mindfulness into everyday settings, including the basketball court or even your commute to work, in order to build the awareness and resilience which can combat harmful negative self-talk. Together, they consider the tools and resources at everyone’s disposal, from mentoring to meditation, which can support mental health, as well as the importance of seeking professional help when necessary.
As we move from November into the holiday season, it is important to acknowledge the challenges for loneliness and isolation that this time of year can present, and empower individuals with tools and guidance to support their wellbeing.
