Take a look at our Guide to Pride!

Why We Have Pride
Pride is so much more than just a celebration—it's a powerful declaration of visibility, acceptance, and solidarity for the LGBTQ+ community. It all began as a response to the unfair treatment and discrimination faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, and today, Pride events remind us of the ongoing struggle for equality and human rights. It's a time to celebrate how far we've come and to acknowledge the battles still being fought.

A Brief History of Pride in the UK

The history of Pride in the UK is truly inspiring, filled with moments of incredible resilience and courage. The first official UK Gay Pride Rally happened in London on July 1, 1972, marking the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York City in 1969. These riots were a pivotal moment, sparking the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. Over the years, Pride in the UK has grown from a small gathering into vibrant, nationwide events that highlight critical issues like legal rights, societal acceptance, and healthcare access.

One remarkable chapter in this history is the solidarity between the LGBTQ+ community and the Welsh miners during the 1984-85 miners' strike. This unlikely alliance, beautifully depicted in the film "Pride," showed how mutual support and collaboration can bridge seemingly vast divides. The LGBTQ+ community rallied to support the miners through fundraising and advocacy, and in turn, the miners backed LGBTQ+ rights, significantly contributing to the broader acceptance and legislative victories that followed.

How You Can Support Pride as an Ally

Being an ally to the LGBTQ+ community means more than just showing up at events—it's about taking meaningful actions to create an inclusive environment all year round. Here are a few ways you can show your support:

1. Educate Yourself and Others: Learn about LGBTQ+ history, the issues facing the community, and the challenges they overcome. Share what you learn with friends, family, and colleagues to foster understanding and acceptance.

2. Speak Up:
Use your voice to challenge discrimination and prejudice whenever you see it, whether at work, in social settings, or online. Speaking out helps create a safer and more supportive environment for everyone.

3. Support LGBTQ+ Businesses and Charities:
Contribute to organizations working towards LGBTQ+ equality and support local LGBTQ+ businesses. Your patronage and donations can make a significant impact.

4. Attend Pride Events:
Your presence at Pride events is a powerful show of solidarity. Check out local parades, festivals, and talks to engage with and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community.

Why Your Support is Vital and Appreciated

The support of allies is crucial in the fight for equality. Allies amplify LGBTQ+ voices, help combat discrimination, and promote a culture of acceptance and respect. Your active support shows LGBTQ+ individuals that they are valued and accepted, creating a sense of belonging and safety. By standing with the LGBTQ+ community, you help drive the change needed to achieve full equality and societal acceptance.

Pride is a time for celebration, reflection, and action. Whether you're a member of the LGBTQ+ community or an ally, your participation and support are invaluable. Let's continue to work together towards a more inclusive and accepting society.

Happy Pride!
