story

Over the course of 15 weeks, I developed across a wide range of areas and learned more than I ever thought was possible. The support from the Training and Readiness teams was excellent, and the interactions with HQ staff and consultants both in and outside of my cohort allowed me to learn and develop technical and professional skills I never knew I needed.

My passion for a career in data is driven by the application of data-driven methodologies to deliver superior business outcomes; a passion which grew throughout my degree in Design Engineering from Imperial College London. HealthTech is a particular enthusiasm of mine due to the data challenges and opportunities that have risen from the increasing popularity of wearables. Wearables present exciting opportunities to monitor the vitals of users on-the-go and when coupled with Artificial Intelligence we can predict diseases early based on patterns that are specific to each of us.

Almost every useful program, application or service fails to function without data. In a time where we are producing more types of data, more amounts of data at an ever-increasing rate it is vital that as the pioneers of many data methods and technologies that we set robust and morally favorable guidelines that ensure people’s data is protected and transparent.

I was attracted to Kubrick’s wide range of clients and sectors as I am keen to experience a variety of domains and unique challenges. I have always loved experiencing new things and prior to joining Kubrick, spent six months travelling the world. This included a West Coast road trip, Croatia, and India! Becoming a data consultant was another great adventure I couldn’t wait to embark on.

In addition to the wide range of clients and sectors, I was also drawn to Kubrick’s high-quality training program. Over the course of 15, weeks I developed across a wide range of areas and learnt more than I ever thought was possible. The support from the Training and Readiness teams was excellent, and the interactions with HQ staff and consultants both in and outside of my cohort allowed me to learn and develop technical and professional skills I never knew I needed. You are also given the opportunity to apply the skills you have developed to a real-life client problem towards the end of training, where you and a team of colleagues to find an effective solution.

At the end of the 15 weeks, I definitely felt prepared for the next part of my journey and was supported by Kubrick as I transitioned from training to client projects. Since going on site, I have worked on numerous challenges however the project I am currently working on has certainly been the most rewarding, as it has given me the opportunity to actively participate in the fight against Covid-19. I feel extremely happy to be supporting the data pipelines for the Covid-19 genomic data which have been vital in furthering our understanding of the virus.

A career in data is extremely dynamic and always changing, so you must be ready to apply a core set of technical and people skills to unknown domains and problems. A top tip is to be comfortable with SQL, one programming language (E.g., python) and one Cloud infrastructure toolset (E.g., AWS), all of which you would learn through Kubrick!

When asked if I would recommend Kubrick to others, my answer is always yes. You will learn a great deal in a short time and continue developing throughout your journey with Kubrick, both through in-house resources and exposure to client projects. The company culture is also second to none and the main reason I always recommend Kubrick as a great place to work. To sum it up in a few words I’d say 'Transparent, Nurturing, and Dynamic'.

If you’re reading this and are thinking of applying, I’d say do it. The 15 weeks in training can be stressful and intense, but it’s also exciting and you’ll definitely learn a lot. Everyone at Kubrick is working towards the same goal, which is to become a better data professional so that we can go on site and solve our client’s data challenges, while cultivating great connections.
