As Women’s History Month comes to a close, we take a moment to spotlight the significance of empowering women through growth and development opportunities, with insights from the 2024 National Women's Conference and reflections on our continued progress.

This March, Kubrick consultants and HQ staff were sponsored to attend the 2024 National Women’s Conference hosted by the Conferences for Women organization, whose mission is to ‘promote, communicate, and amplify the influence of women in the workplace and beyond.’ This annual event attracts influential women leaders including Nobel Laureates, CEOs, captivating thought leaders, and experts in various fields, who provide actionable advice on advancing at work and home.

In their first virtual conference (with the annual event typically attracting 50,000 attendees in-person), the 2024 National Women’s Conference contained an impressive lineup of keynote and breakout session speakers, geared towards fostering personal and professional progression and empowerment.

For Kubrick, this virtual conference day was a catalyst for accelerating employees’ individual and career advancement, and a reinforcement of our mission - unlocking potential in people and organizations. “By sponsoring our employees to attend the National Women’s Conference,” said our Head of Human Resources, Chiara Liquori, “we continue our commitment to supporting their growth, empowerment, and impact in the workplace and beyond.” In an industry such as data and technology, where men continue to comprise the majority percentage of tech professionals, insights from subject matter experts who address the unique challenges and opportunities that many women face in the workplace are especially valuable. Furthermore, impactful women speakers addressed firsthand the challenges they’ve encountered around inclusivity and diversity in the workforce, providing anecdotal stories and experiences, advice, and ways to empower change while staying true to who you are.

Kubrick Data Consultant Joy Pereira reflected on these Conference speaker insights, in particular addressing a Keynote featuring Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG award-winner America Ferrera:

During the various discussions on diversity and the factors that set these women apart, a common theme emerged, eloquently articulated by America Ferrera: ‘We spend a lot of time admiring the problem of diversity, but in order to make progress, we have to act and supply the tools.’ This deliberate investment in effecting change empowers organizations to consistently monitor progress in addressing diversity and inequality issues—a power mere acknowledgment lacks.
As a Hispanic woman, I've found that virtually every organization I've been a part of acknowledges diversity as a challenge they aim to address. However, the tangible difference lies in the organizations that provide actionable tools post-discussion and those that do not. Hearing Ferrera's keynote speech and engaging with the influential women at the conference underscores the necessity of strategically navigating these systems and actively participating in such dialogues to advocate for real action when needed.
Ferrera also shared a personal anecdote about being rejected from a role because she refused to adopt a strong Hispanic accent, leading her to reflect on the impact of her decision on her career trajectory. Participating in conferences alongside influential women and women of color, who have both benefited from and faced obstacles within the system, serves as a reminder of the intricate dance involved in effecting change and advancing in one's career.

Joy’s reflections and considerations speak volumes to the importance of participating in conversations and opportunities that inspire change, foster growth, and create a positive impact that ripples out personally and professionally. Regarding organizations’ commitment towards addressing inequality and diversity challenges, the importance of community and collective impact cannot be emphasized enough. In addition to our internal Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) such as ELEVATE, our network for women, non-binary individuals, and allies, our Working Parents Network, our Diversity Champions, and other ERGs that you can learn more about on our website here, Kubrick is also thrilled to be the Next-Generation Technology Partner of Women in Data. Women in Data recently held their annual flagship event featuring empowering discussions, stories (including Kubrick hosts and speakers), and a shared commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in the data space. At Kubrick, we’re proud to have a 0% median gender pay gap in the U.S., and we strive to create the space for women to connect, grow, and thrive, celebrating each other’s achievements, and providing strategies for overcoming obstacles and advancing in your career and beyond.

Taking this into consideration, our Head of U.S. Talent Acquisition, Stephanie Cavanagh, remarked, “By removing the systemic barriers that continue to inhibit diversity in the tech industry and finding incredible talent from all backgrounds, who we pay to train with us, we’ve built a workforce with double the industry average representation of women and underrepresented groups. We continue to chart a path towards greater representation and equality in this field, recognizing the value that individuals of all backgrounds bring to the table, while taking proactive steps towards creating safe and inclusive spaces for employees across all staff to thrive and be supported.”

In light of Women’s History Month, let’s honor the trailblazing women who pave the way for progress, and continue striving to create a more equitable future for all.
