I chose Kubrick in particular because of their paid training, which is something very few organisations offer. I was also drawn to the variety of options that Kubrick presented, from their wide range of training practices and technologies to their ever-growing list of clients, as it allowed me to tailor my career how I wanted.

Before joining Kubrick, I attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, having obtained a degree in War Studies and master’s in History of Warfare from The University of Birmingham. Although I enjoyed my time in the military and the benefits that came with it, I decided it was not the right path for me. I subsequently left the military in 2020 and joined Kubrick the following month.

I decided to pursue a career in data and technology as I am a very solutions-orientated person and data is all about finding the best solution to any given problem. In my current role as a Data Management consultant, I am constantly looking for new ways to achieve my goals through a wide range of technical skills. Trialling innovative methods that enable different tools to interact with each other in the way I want them to, and often in a way they were not originally designed to, gives me a regular challenge that I embrace and enjoy.

I chose Kubrick in particular because of their paid training, which is something very few organisations offer. I was also drawn to the variety of options that Kubrick presented, from their wide range of training practices and technologies to their ever-growing list of clients, as it allowed me to tailor my career how I wanted.

Since joining Kubrick, I have gained a wide array of skills which have enabled me to grow in lots of ways. During the initial four months, I was given both business and technical training which prepared me for my project on site. Whilst the training was extremely valuable from a technical standpoint, the biggest benefit was the mindset shift I experienced over the four months as I learnt how to pick up new skills rapidly and manipulate what I had already learnt in order to solve future challenges. Since going on site for instance, I have learnt two new coding languages, upskilled on two new software platforms, and enhanced all of the skills that I already had from training.

Kubrick has also been great from a networking standpoint. During the four months of training, you are expected to work closely with your cohort and must collaborate on numerous projects in order to reach solutions. Despite having been on site since August 2020, I am still in contact with members of my cohort and have made connections with numerous Kubrick consultants outside of my cohort. The fact that I trained with a small group of consultants for four months prior to going on site has given me a very useful pool of technically skilled people that I can turn to for advice whenever I need to.

In terms of my current role, I have been involved in setting up a metadata management system for governance, documenting lineage and providing governance oversight to database development teams, designing and developing data quality controls, and setting up and managing a mastered data system. I also developed a Daily Metric reporting system as part of my current project, which I am particularly proud of. This system uses a combination of Python, RESTful APIs, Alteryx, Excel, and Tableau to report and visualise a series of Metrics monitoring the state of the Database system we are currently working on and is a great example of interconnecting various tools to reach an effective solution.

The advice I would give to anyone considering a career at Kubrick would be to go for it, as you will learn so much in such a short space of time and you’ll get to work on projects that most likely wouldn’t have been accessible otherwise. I would also recommend spending some time getting to know at least one coding language before you join Kubrick. Although it’s not a pre-requisite, it is a lot easier to pick up new languages once you’ve got to grips with at least one as many of them share the same functionalities and logic. However, if you don’t have the time or resources to do this then don’t worry as the training is excellent and you’ll pick it up in no time.

Kubrick has definitely accelerated my career and I would recommend it to anyone for all of the reasons outlined above. Growing up, I never considered that this would be the career path I would end up taking but I am very glad that I found my way into data and technology as it is something completely different to what I have envisioned for myself. Had I not made the decision to pursue this path, I would not be in the role I am now or be doing any of the things I love so much.

The main advantage for joining Kubrick is that it gives you a foot in the door with an industry that is growing extremely fast, and that’s not something that should ever be overlooked.
